This is a graph that I made for my class today on firms and business as political actors using data from the Center for Responsive Politics on donations to political actions committees by industry for the 2016 electoral cycle. The size of the arrows is proportional to the amount of money given, and the size of the nodes is proportional to the amount of money donated/received. A few interesting things: Finance, Insurance and Real Estate are the single biggest donors to both Democrats and Republicans. Most large industries (Finance, Health, Energy) are strongly biased towards the Republicans. The donations by Defence and Transportation are fairly marginal compared to the money pouring into politics from the financial sector.Lawyers and lobbyists give more or less equally to both parties.
